The was created in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at 33 of ITP, an auto-immune disease. The Barnes family was awestricken by the clinical skills, caring and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, so they created this international award to say thank you to nurses everywhere.

Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital First in the Country to Receive Primary Plus Stroke Certification
Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital has received DNV Primary Plus Stroke (PSC+) Certification from DNV GL-Healthcare, the first hospital in the nation to do so. PSC+ Certification requirements are based on the most current recommendations from the Brain Attack Coalition (BAC), American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA), the Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) Conditions of Participation as well as the World Stroke Association.
PSC+ center has the personnel, infrastructure, and expertise to diagnose, treat and support stroke patients who require intensive specialized medical and surgical care, specialized tests and interventional therapies. The intent of PSC+ is to be capable of providing initial diagnostic services, stabilization, emergent care, neurointerventional therapy, and post care to acute stroke patients.
PSC+ centers also can function as a resource center for other facilities in their region.
Blue Distinction® Center+ for Bariatric Surgery designation as part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program
Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield has recognized Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital with a Blue Distinction® Center+ for Bariatric Surgery designation as part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program. Blue Distinction Centers are nationally designated health care facilities that show expertise in delivering improved patient safety and better health outcomes, based on objective measures that were developed with input from the medical community.
To receive a Blue Distinction Center+ for Bariatric Surgery designation, a health care facility must demonstrate success in meeting patient safety measures as well as bariatric-specific quality measures, including complication and readmission rate for laparoscopic procedures in sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass and adjustable gastric band. A health care facility must also be nationally accredited at both the facility and bariatric program-specific levels, as well as demonstrated cost-efficiency compared to its peers.
CMS Awards Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital a 5 Star RatingThe Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the federal agency that runs the Medicare program, awarded Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital 5 stars in its 2017 rankings. The hospital is one of eight in Virginia to receive the highest ranking, on a scale of one to five stars. The rankings are based on 57 quality measures, including data on patient re-admissions, effectiveness of care, safety of care, mortality, and patient satisfaction.
Hospital and Health Networks Most Wired AwardSentara Martha Jefferson Hospital is honored to be selected for this year’s Hospital and Health Networks Most Wired award for 2016 . Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital is included with other Sentara Hospitals as well as other health systems that are meeting the industry standard for measuring IT adoption for operational, financial and clinical performance in health care delivery systems.
