Myeloma is cancer of the plasma cells. Plasma cells help your body fight infection. Myeloma causes too many plasma cells to grow in the bone marrow. It can also cause tumors to grow inside the bones. Because there can be many tumors, myeloma is often called multiple myeloma. Symptoms can include bone pain, broken bones, infections and weakness.
There are different types of multiple myeloma. Your care team will develop a personalized treatment plan depending on the myeloma diagnosis.
The two classes of myeloma are:
- Solitary plasmacytoma: Myeloma tumors in only one part of the bone or other organs of the body.
- Extramedullary plasmacytoma: Myeloma outside the bone marrow, such as in the lymph nodes or under the skin.
Each myeloma class includes different subtypes of myeloma.
